what to expect at a job interview

Although every job interview is different, there are a few things you can expect when you meet an employer. If you have a job interview coming up and are feeling nervous, take a look at what you can expect to help you prepare:

Meeting New People

When you go to a job interview you are guaranteed to meet new people. Usually you’ll meet the interviewer before going into the interview room. But you may also find yourself meeting other members of staff. Sometimes employers will take candidates on a tour of their offices and to meet some other staff members to give a better insight into the company. You may also meet other members of senior staff if you go to a group job interview.

Questions About Your Work Experience

During a job interview you will be asked a number of questions on your work experience, skills and knowledge of the industry. The employer will be trying to assess whether you are the right candidate for the job. To prepare for the questions you should read your resume and familiarise yourself with your work experience, highlight any achievements or successes at work that you feel are worth mentioning and highlight what skills you can bring to their company.

Questions About the Company

An employer will usually ask you questions about their company during a job interview. These questions are designed for the employer to find out how much you know about their company, why you want to work for them and what you think you can bring to the company. Spend time before a job interview researching the company and visiting their website. Find out their core business and key goals to ensure you can answer these questions efficiently.

Tests

You may find yourself facing an impromptu test during a job interview. Depending on the job role, some employers test your computer and literacy skills. Unfortunately there isn’t much you can do to prepare for a test but being aware you may be faced with one may help calm your job interview nerves.
