It’s obviously still crucial to use traditional networking, but social media can enhance not only your professional resume but your job search. It can open up opportunities you might not have known about.

As with anything there are certain things you should and shouldn’t do when using social media so read our tips below to help you get started;
Do:

  • Upload links to your own website/blog
  • Upload a photo
  • Include links to any online work (this automatically gives an employer an insight into your career portfolio before you have even met)
  • Follow relevant people. Big business leaders can be found on twitter ‘tweeting’ away about their daily lives. Ensure you follow people you think are relevant to your industry.
  • Look out for vacancies. Recruitment companies, job centres and companies will often update their latest vacancies via social media so keeping on top of this will mean you could be one of the first resumes they see.
  • Have a voice. Social media is all about having a voice and using it to get noticed. Comment on your job, work trends, hobbies, industry changes and general news and make references to relevant people.
  • If possible host your resume template and write a cover letter online to direct employers to.

Don’t:

  • Post inappropriate photos (obviously contain this to personal accounts – any public accounts that an employer might see need to be kept professional)
  • Moan about your day at work. Potential employers do not want to go to your news feed and see you criticising your employer – they may think they could be next!
  • Swear. Remember, employers will have a glimpse of what you are like as a candidate so you need to keep it professional.
  • Be quiet. The entire point of social media is to get involved and to get your name out there. Don’t be afraid to instigate conversations and a have a voice on topical stories.
