interview tips

A huge portion of your waking life is spent at work. Therefore we all have a subconscious awareness of how important a job interview can be and the effect its outcome can have on your life.

It is essential you overcome any nerves and maintain a professional and confident approach. Here are some points to consider:

  • Thoroughly review your resume, cover letter or job application you submitted.  You may be asked by the employer to recall details from your resume and expand on certain points.
  • Play Devil’s Advocate with your own resume. See if you can identify problems with it and potential criticisms with relation to your suitability for the job. It is likely that your employer will ask similar questions so it’s good to be prepared.
  • The majority of the interview should centre on your past experience, skills demonstrated and achievements. Study the role you have applied for and draw parallels between that position and jobs you have performed in the past.
  • You need to show an active interest in the organisation and specifically the department you will be working in. This is a perfect opportunity to demonstrate a proactive nature and enthusiasm about your career. Use every resource available to you to investigate the company. This includes the internet, firsthand accounts from current/ex workers and documentation provided by the company.
  • Prepare your own questions for the conclusion of the interview. This is a further chance to impress your employer and show that you are a considered, forward thinker.
