If you have strong organisational skills, good customer service skills and enjoy interacting with new people then a job as a Receptionist may be for you.

Karen Jack currently works as a Receptionist in Florida. She talks to Resume Surgeon and shares her career advice.

Tell Us About Your Career Background?

I have worked in a variety of industries but have always had an interest in Reception work. I started out working in Manufacturing in the UK and then worked within the car industry running the rental department of a car company. I then worked as a Receptionist at a Veterinary Practice in the UK. About a year ago I relocated to Florida and now work as a Receptionist for a different Veterinary Practice and I really enjoy my job.

What is a Typical Day Like at Work?

It can vary but it always involves answering the telephone, greeting new customers and processing customer orders. Receptionist duties can vary depending on the industry too – for instance, responsibilities would be different in a car showroom compared to a school. But working in a Veterinary Practice I am responsible for answering customer queries, taking orders, administration and supporting senior members of staff.

What is Your Main Responsibility?

The main responsibility is manning the front desk and ensuring the business day runs smoothly. As a Receptionist you are responsible for greeting new customers, smiling and ensuring that high levels of customer service are provided. So I would say customer service is the main responsibility.

What is the Best Part of the Job?

I have always enjoyed meeting new people and as a Receptionist you get to do this a lot! It’s also great to interact and work with animals.

What’s the Worst Part of the Job?

Sometimes people can get quite frustrated at things that you can’t control and that can be tough.

What Career Advice Can You Share?

I have been living in Florida for over a year and did find it difficult to find work at first. The employment market in America is tough so it’s crucial that you make your resume stand out from the crowd. Gaining relevant work experience and showing how you have used your administration and customer service skills in the padt is a good way to get noticed. But I also think finding employment is easier if you are already working. Try and find a position (even if it’s not the perfect one) and you can concentrate on working towards your dream job.
