In this Industry Spotlight Resume Surgeon talk to Matt O’Toole, a UK based Car Salesman, about his job and he shares some sales tips.

Tell Us About Your Career Background?

After I left School I did a Mechanical Apprenticeship at a Ford dealership for five years. After that I went on to get some retail experience at a high street store for five years. I realised I really liked working in the motor industry so I went to work at a Vauxhall dealership in the service reception. After six months I got a job in the car sales department.

Is This Your Most Enjoyable Job?

Definitely – I think if you have a passion or you want to work in a specific industry, you’ll soon know. During my time in retail, although I enjoyed it, I missed working with cars.

What Do You Like About Your Job?

No two days are the same and you get to meet a lot of different people. You have targets and deadlines to meet and, although they can be demanding, it is very satisfying when you hit them. You also get the benefit of a company car which is a nice perk!

How Did You Get into the Industry?

I have always been interested in cars and I started off doing an Apprenticeship and then worked my way up.

What’s the Hardest Part of the Job?

The targets and deadlines can be quite stressful sometimes. Like every job, some customers you deal with can be very demanding and I work a lot of long hours including some weekends. But if you really love the industry you work in, then none of that matters.

Do You Need a Specific Personality to Work in Car Sales?

You definitely need to be outgoing. You need to be a happy person and very good with customers and talking to people. To work in this kind of atmosphere you need to be self motivated too.

Is There a Lot of Career Progression?

You can progress as high as you like in car sales. There are a number of positions – Sales Manager, General Manager, Site Manager or even Owner all within in a dealership. You can also progress within a manufacturer i.e. within Vauxhall, Ford and those positions can vary too – Area Manager, Director, European Director etc

What Would Your Advice be to Someone Looking to Get into this Industry?

You must be prepared to be self motivated and to work long hours or at the weekends. But if you put in the time and effort, the financial benefits can be very good. Depending on where you work you can earn between £30 – 50,000 a year (roughly $48k-$80k USD). Most companies supply you with a company car too so the benefits are great.
