If you enjoy woking in a fast-paced office then becoming a Realtor could be a good career move.

Resume Surgeon caught up with Chelsea Prout, a Lettings Negotiator based in the UK, to gain some tips on how to break into the industry and what to include on your resume when applying for a job.

Why Did You Want to Work in Real Estate?

I have always been very interested in property and I enjoy watching property programmes and home development shows so it seemed like a natural career path for me. I love meeting new people too and working towards targets which is what this industry is all about. You can set yourself targets and earn more money through commission so it’s fast paced and rewarding.

What Training Is Needed?

It depends on where you work as most companies offer training courses. There are a variety to do including the lettings/sales side and the legal aspect.

Is Work Experience Crucial?

I think work experience is crucial because it can teach you the basics of the industry and it also allows you to work out whether it’s the right industry for you. But one of the best things you can do is networking – the more people you meet, the more opportunities you will find out about and the more professional contacts you can make.

Tell Us About a Day at Work?

It can be different for everyone and it depends if you work in sales or lettings. I specialise in lettings so our office will usually have a few staff members out on appointments and showing tenants properties while others will be office based, dealing with enquiries and signing contracts. Usually when working as a Realtor you’ll have a variety of responsibilities – building rapport with customers, sales/lettings and admin work.

What Is the Best Part of the Job?

I love meeting new people and it’s also nice to find people their perfect property.

What Is the Most Difficult Part of the Job?

Days can be long if you don’t have many clients to see.
