288,000 jobs were added to the economy in June, beating previous predictions from experts.

Experts initially predicted that 215,000 jobs would be added to the economy but the latest figures show a big increase on this and figures are much higher than originally anticipated. The industry that seems to be booming the most in terms of job gains is retail and healthcare.

Looking back on previous month’s figures, the number of new jobs being added month by month seems promising. April and May saw 328,000 jobs become available

The Labor department reported the gains and also reported that the jobless rate has also fallen. In June the number of unemployed people fell by 0.2% from May, and is down to 6.1%. People that have been unemployed for six months or longer still account for almost a third of the total jobless rate in the US – although those figures have dropped recently too. The number of Americans unemployed for six months or more dropped by almost 300,000 in June.

The recent employment news comes after an overall improvement in the job market. Last month it was reported that the number of summer jobs and temporary openings becoming available may have been contributing to the increase in the number of roles available too. The number of summer jobs being added to the economy (like vacancies in the service sector and hospitality sector) adds up to 2,000 more jobs than last year so far. As a result, the number of 16-24 year old Americans currently unemployed is down to 19.2 %.
