Knowing who to address your cover letter to is really important in order to send off a good job application. Although in some cases you have to address the employer as ‘Dear Sir/Madam’, it’s much better to find out their name and write a cover letter to them directly. Cover Letter Tips

Most job adverts will tell you who to send your cover letter and resume template to. But in some instances (including if you want to send a speculative cover letter) you may find yourself without a name or individual to write to. It’s much better to address your cover letter personally because it demonstrates you have done your homework and you are very interested in their company.

If you are unable to find a name, here are a few tips to improve your chances of winning a job interview;

Use Their Website

Most companies will have a website full of information and facts. You can also find out company directors and some of the management team names. Spend time researching the company and look for a relevant person to send it to, the HR Manager for example.

Call Them

There is no harm in speculatively calling a company to ask for the HR Managers name. You may be met with a defensive response but explain you would like to send an enquiry in the post.

Network

If there is a particular company you want to work for but can’t find a name to address your resume to – try attending networking events. They are a great way of meeting like-minded contacts and might help with your job application.
