Cover Letter Tips

Talk to the Employer

If you know the name of the person you are sending your resume to or the name of the interviewer then you should address them in your cover letter. By addressing your cover letter to the interviewer you have not only demonstrated that you have done your homework on the job opening but it should also make your application more personal.

Talk About You

Within your cover letter you need to grab the employer’s attention and one way of doing this is by outlining why you are the right candidate for the role. The company will be advertising a role for a reason – they have a gap in the business that they need to fill and you may be the person they need to fill it. Your resume should detail your previous work experience, roles and responsibilities. But use your cover letter to elaborate on these. Paint a picture for the employer – highlight some of your key achievements, highlight projects you are proud of and explain your key skills in more depth. This should help the employer to visualise you as a candidate and whether you are the right fit for their company.

Talk About the Company

Use your cover letter to tell the employer why you want to work for them. You won’t have much opportunity to do this throughout your resume because you need to keep the length to two pages or less. But you can use your cover letter to explain to the employer why you want to work for their company and what you think you could bring to the job. Research the company by looking at their website and show them what you already know – this research should help you to stand out from the other candidates.

Talk About Why You Are Different

It’s likely that the employer has received dozens of other resumes and cover letters for the job you are applying to. Within your cover letter you need to tell them why you are special. You may share similar qualifications and experience as the other candidates applying but try and use specific examples that highlight your performance in the workplace and try to highlight examples that the employer will want to hear more about.
