• Use a closing paragraph asking the prospective employer to review your resume and state that you will look forward to hearing from them with regard to the job position.

It seems counterintuitive, but the auto industry could face a labor shortage within the next few years, says the head of the Center for Automotive Research.

While 228,000 auto jobs have been shed in the past two years, the industry is poised to add about 15,000 this year and could need up to 100,000 new workers a year from 2011 through 2013 as the recession recovery continues, says David Cole, chairman of the non-profit organization that looks at trends related to the auto industry and society.

The new jobs won’t necessarily be filled by those displaced workers. Automakers need workers with more and different skills than in the past on the factory floor, Cole says. Among priorities: computer skills and the ability to work with less supervision than their predecessors. That likely means education beyond high school.

So, if you have an inclination toward science and math, the world needs you in a big way as it continues to move toward green jobs and a green economy.

When Todd Wyman lost his job making parts for trucks and SUVs in June 2008, he started on a path trod by millions of unemployed workers in this recession: He retrained to do something else.

After consulting with the Montgomery County job center in Dayton, Ohio, the 28-year-old decided that the something else would be welding. Industry officials bemoan a shortage of skilled trainees to replace the 10,000 or so older workers retiring each year.

But since graduating from a 10-month, government-subsidized welding program in early December, Wyman has come up empty in the search for his first gig. Wyman and job-center officials say he’s competing against experienced welders in a still-wounded southwestern Ohio economy.

Four reports Thursday show the U.S. economy is still recovering, albeit it slowly. The reports:

• The Institute for Supply Management said its Non-Manufacturing Index registered 55.4% in May, the same as April and March. A reading above 50 indicates growth in the services sector.

The report is considered a key gauge for the health of the jobs market because the service sector accounts for 80% of workers, outside of farm workers.

• Orders to U.S. factories increased in April as a surge in demand for commercial aircraft offset weakness in other areas.

• First-time claims for unemployment benefits dropped 10,000 the week ended May 29, to a seasonally adjusted 453,000, according to the Labor Department.

• Revised figures show productivity grew at a slower rate in the first three months of the year than previously thought, a possible sign that businesses are reaching the limits of their ability to boost output with fewer workers.

The company also said it will commit $50 million over three years to help workers pay for books and tuition above the reduced tuition rate. After the reduction, tuition will cost $212.50 per undergraduate credit hour and $255 for graduate credits.

Wal-Mart Chief Administrative Officer Tom Mars said the program grew out of a larger commitment to cultivate talent within the company. The plan is open to domestic workers at Wal-mart and Sam’s Club stores.

“We wanted to create a new way of thinking about what we call associate development,” Mars said.
