job interview

With so much competition out there, it’s now more important than ever to make an impression during a job interview and to stand out to the employer. Employers see multiple candidates for every one position they advertise, and if they all share similar qualifications as you – how do you make yourself stand out from the crowd? Here are three ways you can stand out in a job interview:

Career Portfolio

Not everyone will have a career portfolio and many candidates may forget to take it to interviews. But a career portfolio can be a great help when you are trying to explain your expertise. Career portfolios, depending on the industry, are usually full of examples of work and statistics that highlight your expertise and support any claims you make on your resume. Taking a career portfolio to a job interview will make you look prepared and will help you to support your resume content.

Ask Questions

During a job interview the employer will obviously be asking you questions to assess whether you are the right candidate for the job. But to win extra points and to really show that you are keen to work for the company you should ask the employer some questions based on the job role and the company. Visit the company website before the interview and create some questions to ask the employer. Not only will this show that you have done your research and are keen to find out more about the role, but it will make you stand out from other candidates as not everyone asks questions during an interview.

Give Examples

Many candidates will attend a job interview with their resume and cover letter and answer some questions based on why they are the right person for the job. But what many candidates forget to do is to answer questions and to support them with previous examples of work. During your interview, try to give examples that really highlight the point you are trying to make. Use your work experience and hobbies to support your answers as this will give the employer a real idea of what you could be like in the workplace.
