The New Year is here and many people will be making resolutions. One of the most popular resolutions people make at this time of year is to find their dream job. Whether it’s finding a job as a Scuba Diving Instructor, writing a book or becoming a Personal Trainer – you can make your career goals happen this year. Check out our tips below to help you start your New Year job search!

Update Your Resume

One of the first things to do before you start your job search is to update your resume content. Revisit your resume and get it ready to send out to employers. Check through your personal statement and career objective and ensure they are on point with what you are aiming for now. Update your work experience with anything you have done recently – ensuring that the most recent job title and responsibilities are at the top of your resume. You should also look at the key skills section of your resume and include anything you feel a prospective employer would find desirable.

Know What Job You Want

This is crucial – you won’t find your dream job if you don’t know what it is! Before you start looking for jobs make a list of the types of jobs you would want to work in. Establish job titles and responsibilities and then match these with your long-term career goals. Whittle your list down to only a few jobs as this will help you to target your resume more effectively.

Follow Companies

Social media is a great way to interact with companies and to find out about job opportunities. Visit social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Linked In and start following companies and individuals you are interested in. Not only will this give you the chance to apply for jobs directly and to keep up with the latest information, but it will enable you to interact with people working in the industry which should help you with networking and raising your industry profile.

Promote Yourself

Once you have decided your career path, started networking with contacts and updated your resume, you should now prepare to promote yourself and your experience. Head online and create an account on all the major social networking sites. Include your expertise in your online biography and start tweeting/posting updates about relevant industry news. The more you talk on these platforms, the more chance you will have of an employer noticing you. Interact with other professionals and consider creating an online host for your resume. Whether it’s creating a blog or posting your achievements in an online career portfolio, you need to promote your successes and experience!

Keep Applying

Now you have the foundations in place, you can apply for your dream job! Although you may have made a New Year’s resolution to find a new job remember that it can take a long time to find the right position. Many companies are also swamped with job applications at this time of year and so competition is tough. Keep your resume updated and keep applying – you will find your dream job eventually!
