It’s now not always about dressing for a job interview and heading straight down to the employer’s office for a face-to-face meeting. The popularity of services like Skype has led to more and more companies conducting first interviews via the internet in the form of a video interview.|
This is really different to a telephone job interview because the employer is able to see you. A variety of companies will use this as a way to meet a candidate before deciding whether or not to invite them to a face-to-face interview. And other employers will use this out of necessity – for example, a candidate they are interviewing overseas.

- Update your resume template and ensure you have it to hand.

- Ensure you don’t have anyone or anything in the background. Pick somewhere plain and quiet to conduct the interview.
- Practice beforehand. Just like any job interview, spend time preparing questions and answers and practicing your interview body language.
- Take a notepad and pen. You might only be in your living room but having a list of questions to ask will help to demonstrate how prepared you are.
- Do your research on the company and the role.
- Test your webcam before the interview. It is vital you do this because if it gets to the interview and you cancel it because of technical problems it could make you look unprepared.
- Before the interview spend time relaxing – if you come across nervous on camera this will make the employer feel uncomfortable.
