A report on the BBC website has detailed how 200, 000 new jobs were added to the US economy in December 2011.

The Labor Department said that the unemployment rate (8.5%) is now at a three-year low.

The increase in jobs beat a lot of predictions and vacancies were added across a number of sectors including transportation and retail.
